Photographs and information on a bell on the Montpellier wine estate in Tulbagh. The wine estate Montpellier outside Tulbagh has a bell that at first sight looks identical to the bells at Uitkijk and at Vredenburg, both in the Stellenbosch area.
The bell figures in a beautifully made bell-tower from 1714. According to the owners of the estate, the bell had been bought around 2005. What makes the bell especially intriguing is the emblem that appears in the middle of the front waist of the bell. As mentioned before, the emblem also appears on the Barwell bell of the Dutch Reformed Church in Durbanville and on the chime of the St Mary’s Church in Woodstock.
