Staminal column in long. section, showing the entire pistil at an early stage of the flower (styles cohering). 3. Androecium and styles at a later stage of the flower. 4. Anther, split transversely. 5. One stigma. 6. Fruit, with persistent calyx and involucel (e.c.). 7. One mericarp (nutlet). 8 and 9. Gland and hairs from leaf. B. Hibiscus urens L. fil., from the Karoo. 1. Flowering twig. 2. Ripe capsule in persistent calyx (ca), the front half of the calyx cut away, the involucel complete. 3. Seed, long. section. 4. Stellate hair from calyx. C. Hibiscus aethiopicus L., with one freshly opened and one older flower.
