Photographs and information on the bell of the Onverwacht-Die Bos estate, one of the oldest bells in South Africa. For a very long time the Onverwacht-Die Bos estate has been the property of the Morkel family. During the ages, the estate became totally enclosed by housing developments, but a substantial part of the original property is still owned by the family. According to the text on the bell, it has been made in Amsterdam in 1723 making this one of the oldest bells in the Western Cape. Comparing it to one of the bells in the Cape Town Dutch Reformed Groote Kerk, we are convinced that the bell has been made by Jan Albert De Grave.
