dc.descriptionFam. 70. Sapindaceae. A. Smelophyllum capense (Sond.) Radlk. 1. Fruiting twig, the ripe capsule only one-seeded (by abortion), showing the fleshy coat of the seed (arillus). 2. Seed without the aril. 3. Seed in long. section (the testa is not quite as thick in nature as in the drawing). From specimens collected near Van Staaden’s river by Mr J.L. Drège. B. Dodonaea Thunbergiana Eckl. & Zeyh. 1. Twig of ♂ plant, with scale insect (Ceroplastes). 2. Staminate flower (4/1). 3. Bisexual flower, but the anthers sterile, the front sepals (2) removed. 5. Fruit, transverse section. Fam. 71. Melianthaceae. Tribe Greyieae. C. Greyia Sutherlandii Harv. 1. Leaf and raceme. 2. Androecium and fringe of disc. 3. Capsule, the seeds shed, with persistent fringe of disc. *Named after Dr Karl Ludwig Pappe, born at Hamburg 1803, colonial botanist (Cape Colony). Author of several books, e.g. on Cape Forest Trees; Medicinal Plants; Cape Fishes etc. Died at Capetown in 1862.
