Portion of male catkin: 3 buds, 5/1. 4. Male flower. 5. Male flower without the calyx, the front petal bent down. The rudimentary pistil in the centre of the 4 stamens. 6. Female flower, with 4 rudimentary stamens. 7. Diagram of female flower. 8. Seed. 9. Seed, one cotyledon removed. Fam. 115. Loganiaceae. B. Chilianthus arboreus (L. fil), A. DC., with visiting beetle (Promeces longipes). C. Strychnos Atherstonei Harv. 1. Twig with fruit. 2. Flower, 2/1. D. S. spinosa Lam. 1. Twig. 2. Ripe fruit, transverse section.
