A. Carissa grandiflora A. DC. 1. Flowering twig. 2. Flower without corolla. 3. Ovary, opened, 4/1. 4. Fruit, one-half. 5. Long styled flower. 6. Short-styled flower in section, the petals shortened.
B. Pachypodium succulentum (Thunb.) DC.
C. Strophanthus capensis A. DC. (S. speciosus Reber). 1. Flowering twig from a shrub cultivated in the Municipal gardens at Capetown. On the wild plant, Natal, etc., the leaves are usually larger. The flowers visited by Danais Chrysippus. This handsome butterfly is somewhat rare near Capetown but more frequent further east, as its larva feeds only on Asclepiads, in the neighbourhood of Capetown only on Asclepias rotundifolia, of which a twig is figured on Plate 20. 2.
