dc.description	A. Haemanthus coccineus L. 1. Flowering scape with umbel (March). The butterfly is Meneris Tulbaghia, a regular visitor of our red autumnal mountain-flowers. 2. Single flower. 3. Flower opened, showing a few ovules in the ovary (o) and the short, slightly inflated perianth-tube (n. nectary); the filaments are inserted at the base of the free portion of the segments. 4 and 5. Bulb with young leaves (half grown) and bunch of fruits. ½ nat. size (May). 6 and 7. One ripe berry (pulpy), carrying two seeds, one of them shown attached to a slimy thread as dragged out by some animal when eating these berries. 8. Germinating seed, showing the green endosperm, the elongating hypocotyl and the first leaf. B. Brunsvigia gigantea Heist. 1. Capsule with decaying walls and the germinating seeds. 2. Seedling. Nat. size.
