dc.description.abstract | Next to the Alphen Hotel in Constantia stands a large horseshoe-type bell tower that seems to be made for a bell of fair size. The bell that hangs in the tower is small but of great historic and artistic value. Moreover, it is one of the oldest and most beautiful bells that have been encountered in the Western Cape. Below the shoulder figures the picturesque Hemony-band with putti, playing different instruments like the violin and the flute. Between two pairs of moulding wires stands the text that refers to the founders and the founding year: ME FECERUNT AMSTELODAMI AO 1705 + CLAES NOORDEN ET IAN DE GRAVE. Then follows a smaller band with flowers and angel heads. Above the sound bow are three moulding wires and another two on the knee.
The outside of the bell is still in excellent condition, notwithstanding the age of the bell and the fact that it has been hanging outside. It is clear that this bell was not intended for its current location but its history is unknown. Looking inside the bell shows that the clapper has been changed twice. The original clapper has been replaced by one on a U-shape fixture that was inserted into the crown of the bell by drilling two holes in it. The holes are still there and have been seconded by a new pair, perpendicular to the first one. It is not impossible that these replacements have an influence on the tone of the bell. | |
