Abstract

The Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk in Vanrhynsdorp has two bells, one in the tower, the other in a neat pointed horseshoe tower aside from the church. The latter bell caries no decorations except for one moulding wire just above the sound bow. Fortunately, the bell in the tower offers more. Below the shoulder is a very attractive band formed by two wavily bands that form small and large circles. Within the small circles are neat flowers with six petals. On the sound bow figures one moulding wire and above it a reference to the sponsors of the bell GESKENK DEUR MNR. EN MEV. W.G. SMITH BOTTERVLEI, VANRHYNSDORP. 1956. There are two additional items on the bell that however need further investigation. Below the decorative band figures a small plaque that would be sufficiently large to cover a founder’s emblem if it was ever there. The other item is a painted message that probably refers to the delivery of the bell. It reads on three lines: EKS N25 / VIA/ CAPE TOWN / SA. It is a pity that we cannot pin down the founder of a bell that nevertheless proves the craftsmanship of its maker.
