The Stellenbosch University Archives is the custodian of the University’s archives and records which relate to the historical, cultural, and administrative development of Stellenbosch University. Established in 1996, the Archives plays a crucial role in preserving the institutional memory of the university and functions as an educational and research facility. Within the SU Archives, you can find a wealth of unique and primary sources related to the University and its predecessors, which include Stellenbosch Gymnasium, Stellenbosch College, and Victoria College. Notably, the oldest document in the SU Archives is a minute book from Stellenbosch Gymnasium dating back to 1864. This document marks the beginning of an extensive series of registers, minutes, and financial documents that trace the institution's history. An important component of the Archives’ resources is the Watson-Lockley and Edrich photographic collections, visual resources depicting the University and the town of Stellenbosch dating back to the late nineteenth century. To ensure a continuous documentary history of Stellenbosch University, the Archives is also responsible for providing records management services to the University community.
