The object of the writer of these pages has been to
present facts, and to point out evident deductions from
those facts, but to state nothing on his own authority.
Too often mere personal abuse has taken the place of
reason in public discussions of the future of South
Africa. The writer trusts that he has avoided this
error; while by preserving his anonymity and by
leaving the responsibility for statements of fact with
official Blue Books and with those who are widely
recognized as authorities on the subject, he hopes to
gain an impersonal and unbiassed hearing for his
views.
