Photographs and information on a bell on Hazendal wine estate near Stellenbosch. Outside Stellenbosch in the Bottelary area the Hazendal Wine Estate is situated. The estate has a bell hanging in a horseshoe-type bell tower. This bell offers a number of problems. According to a picture of 1865 there is no bell in the tower, indicating that the current bell is a later addition. The inscription on the current bell is made at the very top and seems to be hammered in. We have no idea what the date 30—11—1726 Refers to. However it should be clear that around 1726 decorations on bells would only indicate the year of founding. Moreover the common writing of the month November as 11 is of a later date. There are no further decorations on the bell apart from a few moulding wires at the lip. There is small crack in the lip of the bell.
The estate itself is now owned by a Russian, Dr Mark Voroshin, a professional dentist and chairman of Marvol Company.
