The Kruythuis is one of the historic buildings on the Braak in the very heart of Stellenbosch. On top of the roof of the building is a bell of about 40 cm in height. The Kruythuis was a VOC-building and was used to store ammunition. One therefore might expect that the bell dates from times when the building got its function. The current bell-tower is not original as it doesn’t appear on a painting by S. Davis from 1779. It however does figure on a photograph from 1900. Unfortunately, the bell has undergone changes. On one side we find the (over-painted) effigy of a saint, which indicates that probably the bell was first used in a church. On the reverse side one notices that ornaments on the bell were removed. Because of its location on top of the roof it was impossible to get a clearer view. This needs further investigation.
