Photographs and information on the United Reformed Church and its bell in Zoar. In Zoar the Evangelical Lutheran Church dates from 1839. According to the information in the Annual Reports in the Jahresbericht der Gesellschaft zur Beforderüng der Evangelischen Missionen unter den Heiden zu Berlin we read: In die skool ywer oud en jonk vlytig en daar is reeds enkeles wat kan lees... Almal lewe nou in vrede saam en die Sondagstilte is besonders; slegs die kerkklokke versteur die stilte! This clearly indicated that the church had a bell rather soon.
The church itself has an interesting history as it started out as a mission from the Berliner Missionsgesellschaft but later became a NGK-Sendingskerk. As one can read on the church it now belongs to the Verenigde Gereformeerde Kerk. The bell is a traditional one from the BARWELL foundry as is proved by the emblem on the waist of the bell. A few more moulding rings are the only remaining decorations on the bell that does not carry a founding date.
