At the Steenberg Hotel in Tokai we found a ship’s bell of simple making and containing the inscription SHIP. MANCHESTER just above the waist. The original canon has been broken off. Searching the internet, we could discover that the ship has been mostly used to transfer immigrants from Europe to the United States of America. We could trace a fair number of passengers’ lists and stories of the travellers. The oldest such list dates from December 1827 suggesting that the bell might be quite old. Further examples dealt with lists between 1845 and 1862. We have no idea what has happened with the ship or how the bell ended up in the bell tower of the hotel.
